Malakoff Considering To Expand University Duathlon Series Nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), a leading independent water and power producer, is considering to expand the Malakoff Duathlon University Series (MUDS) nationwide as its Commitment to Community Sports events.

The Commitment to Community Sports is one of Malakoff's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platform while the duathlon series, which enters its fifth edition this year, was held in universities around the Klang Valley.

"We are considering to expand it in the near future. We have received some request by other universities," its Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Yusop Rashid told reporters at the official launch of 2011 Malakoff University Duathlon Series in Bangsar, here Wednesday.

The first leg of the 2011 MUDS, which involves running-cycling-running disciplines, will be held at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) on Sept 24, followed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on Oct 1 and the grand finale at Universiti Malaya (UM) on Oct 15.

Yusop added that the event have gained it popularity among the university students and expected the number of participants would increased this year.

"With increasing awareness and interest in duathlons, the race has gained popularity amongst students and also local athletes.

"The number of participants has increased from year to year. The inaugural MUDS which was held in 2003 attracted only 321 participants and the number increased to 739 last year," said Yusop.

He added that Malakoff was expecting more than 800 participants for this year's edition.

MUDS comprises four categories -- university (Men's and Women's), open (Men's and Women's), team relay (Mixed and Men's) and media (Men's and Women's).
